Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
How does the SA3200D meet a 12-bay, 10GbE baseline?
It has twelve native internal drive bays and at least one built-in 10GbE data port. A 10GbE link rating does not guarantee end-to-end file throughput; the network, client, media, pool and workload also matter.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I build a two-drive mirror inside the SA3200D?
Synology lists RAID 1 for this model, so two compatible internal drives can form a mirror. That only protects against a drive failure; keep a separate backup for deletion, corruption, malware and site loss.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the base SA3200D already contain all of its possible bays?
No. It has twelve native bays. Synology documents expansion to 36 total bays using two RXD1219sas units sold separately. The simple finder counts native internal bays, not optional shelf capacity.
Explore this need in the finder →The Synology SA3200D is a 2U, twelve-bay SAS storage system with two active-passive controllers. It belongs to the rack-mounted business end of the NAS category, not the plug-in desktop segment. Its case for evaluation is the pairing of internal controller failover, shared storage, built-in 10GbE per controller and a route to 36 total SAS bays. Compared with the SA3400D, it uses a lower-core Xeon D-1521 processor and has a more specific SAS drive list; the two models should not be treated as interchangeable merely because both carry a “D” suffix and a dual-controller design.
What the base chassis includes and accepts
The SA3200D has twelve native hot-swappable positions. Synology's current specifications list 3.5-inch dual-port SAS hard drives, 2.5-inch dual-port SAS hard drives and 2.5-inch dual-port SAS SSDs. SATA drives are not listed for this model, so check both the exact media type and the individual compatibility list. The English hardware guide documents a main unit, two AC cords and screws for 2.5- and 3.5-inch drives. It does not include the data drives. The separate RKS-02 rail kit and the two RXD1219sas expansion shelves should also be checked against the seller's package rather than assumed included.
Synology specifies a maximum of 36 total bays when two RXD1219sas shelves are attached. The hardware guide's capacity figure is up to 192 TB raw in the base unit using twelve 16 TB disks and 576 TB raw with two shelves under the same historical drive-size example. Those are configuration-dependent raw ceilings, not usable volume promises; current disk sizes, compatibility, pool layout and redundancy all affect the result.
Two controllers, but not an HA cluster of two systems
Each controller has a four-core Intel Xeon D-1521 processor and 8 GB of DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory. Memory is expandable to a listed 64 GB per controller. The product page describes automatic system failover to the secondary controller and an active-passive arrangement. It also says the SA3200D does not form a high-availability cluster with another server unit. That is an important boundary: the two controller modules protect the service inside this appliance, but the model is not a pair of independent NAS boxes, and controller redundancy does not replace a separate backup.
Each controller provides two 1GbE RJ-45 ports, one 10GbE RJ-45 port and a Mini-SAS HD expansion connection. A 10GbE link can be useful with suitable switch and client equipment, but it is only one part of the path. The manufacturer lists one PCIe 3.0 x8 slot per controller for compatible network cards, which are optional. Do not count optional cards as a standard interface or infer real-world file throughput from a port's line rate.
Volume limits and recovery planning
Supported internal file systems include Btrfs and ext4. The product specifications list RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10 and RAID F1 alongside Basic and JBOD. A two-drive RAID 1 mirror is one documented arrangement, but it only addresses a disk-failure case. For files that matter, maintain another copy on separate hardware or a remote destination and test a restore. The single-volume limit is listed as 108 TB by default and up to 200 TB when at least 32 GB of memory is installed, subject to Synology's conditions. The volume maximum is not the same thing as raw capacity or available user space.
The product page also discusses backup applications, snapshots and virtual-machine tools. Those functions can broaden the role of a business storage platform, but their usefulness depends on compatible software versions, capacity, licenses where applicable, setup and operator skill. Synology's performance and availability claims are manufacturer statements, not measurements made for this review.
Fit and pre-order checks
At 19.7 kg and 88 × 482 × 724 mm, the SA3200D takes 2U in a four-post 19-inch rack. The rail kit is separate. Plan for rack depth, the weight of loaded drives, room cooling, redundant power, controller service access and the extra shelf footprint before choosing it. Synology lists a five-year limited warranty; confirm how the purchase receipt, seller and region affect the actual coverage.
Organizations evaluating the SA3200D should confirm the exact model suffix, SAS-only drive compatibility, memory configuration, RKS-02 rails, expansion-shelf model and cabling, switch/client support and an independent recovery target. It may suit a deployment that needs twelve internal SAS bays and the documented dual-controller design but does not need the SA3400D's higher-core processors. A home user or a buyer wanting included SATA drives, silent operation, minimal rack work or a simple one-box backup plan should look at a different class of system. This is a documentation-led review; we did not own, install, test or benchmark a unit and do not claim current seller inventory or pricing.
