A useful fit for

A fit for a four-post rack that needs twelve native SATA bays, a built-in 10GbE data link, and dual hot-swappable power supplies, with documented optional expansion.

The main tradeoff

It is a 2U, 578 mm-deep current spec with drives, expansion shelf and rails sold separately; a dated hardware guide differs on depth, so verify chassis clearance against the exact current unit before ordering.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does RS2423RP+II have twelve internal drive positions before expansion?

Yes. Synology lists twelve native 3.5-inch SATA HDD or 2.5-inch SATA SSD bays. The optional RX1223RP adds twelve more, but is separate hardware and does not change the base chassis count.

Can this rack NAS meet a one-port 10GbE minimum?

The official specification lists one built-in 10GbE RJ-45 data port plus two separate 1GbE data ports. A matching link rating still depends on the switch, client, cabling, drives and workload; the performance headline is a manufacturer test, not a promise for every transfer.

Is storage-drive redundancy the same as its redundant power supplies?

No. Synology lists RAID 1, so two compatible internal SATA drives can be arranged as a mirror; the RS2423RP+II also has separate redundant, hot-swappable power supplies. A drive mirror does not protect against deletion, theft or failure of the whole NAS, so keep an independent backup.

Twelve bays in the base chassis, not twenty-four

The RackStation RS2423RP+II is a 2U, twelve-bay NAS for a managed rack where shared files, backups or surveillance storage need room to grow. Its twelve front positions accept compatible 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology's “up to 24 drives” figure refers to one separately purchased RX1223RP expansion shelf attached to the unit; it does not describe the base chassis. The shelf also needs rack space, power and installation planning. For the finder, the model counts as twelve internal bays, not twenty-four.

The size deserves particular attention before purchase. Synology's current product page and February 2026 datasheet give 88 × 482 × 578 mm with ears and a weight of 11.9 kg. The model-specific hardware guide, last updated in October 2025, instead gives a 552 mm depth with ears. Both are manufacturer sources for this exact name, and the 26 mm discrepancy matters in a rack with limited rear clearance. Treat the dimension as unresolved for the specific physical revision: ask the seller or Synology to confirm the chassis measurement and leave room for rear airflow, power cables and service access rather than assuming the shorter figure.

Redundant power is separate from a drive mirror

The “RP” distinction has a practical purpose here. RS2423RP+II lists redundant, hot-swappable 550-watt power supplies, and its standard package lists two AC power cords. That can reduce disruption if one supply fails, but resilience depends on how the cords are connected. Two supplies plugged into the same vulnerable outlet or UPS do not create two independent power paths.

Storage redundancy is a different choice. Synology lists RAID 1 and Synology Hybrid RAID alongside larger multi-drive options. A two-drive RAID 1 arrangement can keep a volume available after one supported drive failure, but it consumes the capacity of the second disk and does not recover deleted files or protect the whole rack from theft, fire or a power event. Plan a separate backup destination, limit its credentials and test a restore.

One built-in 10GbE port and two 1GbE ports

The built-in data ports are one 10GbE RJ-45 connection and two 1GbE RJ-45 connections. That meets a requirement for one port rated at 10Gbps, but it does not mean all three links are 10GbE or that a client will receive 10Gbps of file throughput. The rest of the route—the switch, client adapter, cable, drive layout and workload—still sets the result. A PCIe slot can accept listed network expansion cards, while the separate Mini-SAS HD port connects the RX1223RP shelf; neither optional path is part of the base network rating.

Synology advertises sequential throughput above 3,500/1,700 MB/s for the family. Those numbers are the manufacturer's stated test results, not independent measurements in this assessment. They should not be used as a forecast for random work, a wireless client or a partially populated volume.

ECC memory, file services and fit

The system starts with 8 GB of DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory in one of two slots and lists 32 GB as its maximum. Its AMD Ryzen V1780B processor has four cores and eight threads. The specification names SMB and NFS file service and Btrfs or ext4 for internal storage. That makes this a business-focused NAS platform, but the parts list is not a workload plan: virtual machines, concurrent users, snapshots and backup jobs can make memory and disk choices just as important as the bay count. Confirm compatible drives and any memory upgrade against Synology's current compatibility documentation.

Compared with the RS2423+, the RP+II retains twelve native bays, a 10GbE port plus two 1GbE links, the same memory baseline and an RX1223RP expansion path. Its differentiator is dual 550W supplies, two listed AC cords and the current longer chassis. The RS2423+ uses a single 500W supply and one power cord; choose the latter if redundant PSU hardware is not needed and the shallower current measurement is useful. Do not confuse this power comparison with RAID or link aggregation.

What to verify before buying

Synology's support table observed October 29, 2026 lists RS2423RP+II as Generally Available, with Full DSM updates, Full Technical Support and a three-year warranty. That describes manufacturer support status, not the inventory, included items or warranty application of a particular retailer. The manufacturer's package list names the main unit, accessory pack, two power cords and installation guide; it does not list data drives, the RX1223RP shelf or RKS-02 sliding rails. Check the exact model suffix, rack depth, power feeds, disk identifiers, rails and any expansion bundle in the offer itself.

Assessment: RS2423RP+II makes sense when twelve native bays, built-in 10GbE and redundant power are requirements for an actively managed rack. It is a poor fit for a quiet desk setup, a shallow rack that cannot absorb its uncertain 578-versus-552-mm depth, or a buyer expecting shelf capacity and drives in the base box. This is a documentation-based model assessment; no installation, ownership or performance test is claimed.
