A useful fit for

An eight-bay, short-depth 2U rack NAS for a branch or small team that needs documented two-drive storage redundancy and dual power supplies.

The main tradeoff

It is deeper, heavier, louder in Synology’s published idle-noise setup, and less shallow than the standard RS1221+; it still has only four built-in 1GbE ports. Faster NICs, drives, RX418 and rails are separate compatibility and package checks.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What does the RP suffix change on RS1221RP+?

The eight native SATA bays, four built-in 1GbE ports, processor and base ECC memory are shared with RS1221+. The RP model has dual redundant power supplies and is 101 mm deeper with ears (407.5 mm versus 306.6 mm) and 1.5 kg heavier; it requires a deeper rack space and a separately purchased RKS-02 rail kit.

Does RS1221RP+ include eight drive disks or twelve internal bays?

No. The chassis has eight native SATA drive positions. A separate RX418 expansion unit adds four more, bringing the documented total to twelve. Synology does not list data drives in its base unit package; verify the specific seller’s configuration and each drive model’s compatibility.

Does redundant power satisfy the finder’s two-drive redundancy requirement?

No—those are different forms of continuity. The RP suffix means redundant power supplies; the finder’s option means a documented two-drive storage arrangement. RS1221RP+ separately documents RAID 1/two-drive SHR, but neither feature replaces a separate backup.

Eight bays in a short-depth 2U rack

The RS1221RP+ is an eight-bay RackStation for a small business, branch or IT room where a dedicated rack NAS is useful and continuity of power matters. Synology lists eight hot-swappable SATA bays for compatible 3.5-inch hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA drives. It is not a desktop enclosure, and the base package does not include data drives. The system’s supported RAID choices include RAID 1 and Synology Hybrid RAID, so two drives can form a documented mirror. That protects against a defined member-drive failure, not deletion, malware, theft or loss of the whole device; a separate, tested backup remains necessary.

Synology lists expansion to twelve total bays using one RX418. That is a separate external unit, not four extra positions hiding in the RS1221RP+ chassis. This model also supports compatible M.2 NVMe or SATA SSD cache through a PCIe adapter, but it has no integrated M.2 bays. Treat the cache card, the expansion shelf and the base drive positions as three different things when planning cost and rack space.

Redundant power is the RP model’s defining distinction

The RS1221RP+ has dual redundant 350-watt power supplies. A second supply can help maintain service when a supply or its power path fails, especially when the supplies are fed from separate protected circuits. It does not create another copy of the data, and it is not the same feature as RAID 1 or Synology High Availability. A mirror addresses a member-drive fault; the RP suffix addresses a power-supply fault; an HA cluster requires a second compatible NAS and its own network and storage design.

The corresponding standard RS1221+ has one 250-watt supply. Otherwise the family shares its eight native bays, AMD Ryzen V1500B processor, 4 GB ECC memory baseline and four built-in gigabit ports. The RP chassis is 101 mm deeper with rack ears—407.5 mm versus 306.6 mm—and weighs 8.4 kg rather than 6.9 kg. Before purchasing, measure usable rack depth and clearance behind the rails for airflow, cabling and service. Synology lists four-post rack installation for the RP model with the RKS-02 rail kit, which is sold separately; the product page does not list the standard unit’s direct two-post mounting option for the RP chassis.

Four gigabit ports, not built-in multigig

Four 1GbE RJ-45 ports are built into the unit. The product family supports optional 10GbE or 25GbE cards, but those are add-in hardware, not capabilities already present on the rear panel. A faster card only helps after checking the compatible NIC list, PCIe use, switch, client adapter and cabling. Nor do four gigabit ports add up to a 4-Gbps single-client transfer; link aggregation and other multi-port modes have specific conditions. For a basic gigabit network, the built-in ports may be enough. If a 2.5GbE single-port minimum is a hard requirement, the RS1221RP+ does not meet it as sold.

The processor is a four-core 2.2-GHz AMD Ryzen V1500B. The standard installed memory is 4 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM; Synology lists two slots and a maximum of 32 GB, with a note that non-Synology memory can affect complete warranty or technical support. The internal file-system list includes Btrfs and ext4, while the software specifications include SMB and NFS file service. Synology quotes sequential read/write performance above 2,315/1,147 MB/s for this family from internal testing. This review did not benchmark the model, and that result should not be treated as a promise for a particular set of disks, network or workload.

Drive layout, package and operating constraints

A two-drive RAID 1 plan uses two compatible SATA drives in the native bays and sacrifices the second drive’s capacity to a mirrored copy. The exact supported drive list, model capacity and firmware notes matter; eight bays do not imply eight drives are supplied. If starting with fewer drives, confirm the intended storage pool can expand in the way you expect before buying. Synology lists 108 TB as the maximum single-volume size, not the volume size a default set of drives will deliver. The manufacturer’s volume limit and user-available capacity depend on storage configuration and data overhead.

The manual’s package contents distinguish two AC power cords for this RP variant. Confirm the seller’s exact item and power-cord package; the base accessories do not imply that rails, expansion shelves, data drives or network cards are included. Synology’s U.S. status page observed October 29, 2026 lists the RS1221RP+ as Generally Available, with Full DSM updates, Full Technical Support and a three-year warranty. That is manufacturer status, not live seller inventory or a particular offer’s warranty.

Who should consider it?

This is a credible shortlist candidate when an eight-bay rack system, documented two-drive redundancy and redundant power are all meaningful requirements, and the 1GbE base networking is acceptable. It is less attractive where rack depth is tight, quieter operation is important, or a 2.5GbE built-in port is expected without a card. The standard RS1221+ saves 101 mm and 1.5 kg, but gives up redundant power; the four-bay RS826RP+ is a newer 1U alternative with redundant power but half as many native bays. Those are different operational choices, not cosmetic variants.
