A useful fit for

A rack-based organization needing at least 12 native SATA bays, a built-in single-port 10-GbE path and redundant internal power, with rack depth, power, drives, drive compatibility, backup and seller package checked separately.

The main tradeoff

This is a substantial rack system with 12 native trays and dual 10-GbE but requires rack space, significant power planning and its own compatible drives. Expansion totals conflict across official pages; only native bays are used. Neither drives nor rails are listed in the manufacturer reference package.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

How many native SATA bays does LOCKERSTOR 12R Pro Gen2 (AS7212RDX) have?

The exact model has 12 native SATA trays. The separate single M.2 NVMe position does not add a SATA bay. A minimum of 12 bays fits; 13 excludes it. Confirm the exact drive/firmware tuple before ordering.

Does LOCKERSTOR 12R Pro Gen2 (AS7212RDX) have built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet?

Yes. The exact hardware selector lists two individual built-in 10-GbE ports (plus two Gigabit ports). A rated port does not guarantee 10-Gb/s file copies; the entire client-switch-cable-storage path matters.

Can LOCKERSTOR 12R Pro Gen2 (AS7212RDX) support a buyer-created two-drive mirror?

A possible owner-created RAID 1 plan uses two buyer-selected compatible SATA drives in two of its 12 native trays and one built-in 10-GbE port, leaving 10 bays open. The reference package lists no data drives or initialized volume. Check drive compatibility, protect existing data before setup and keep another backup; RAID 1 is not backup.

Research-based assessment: The ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 12R Pro Gen2 (AS7212RDX) is a 2U rack NAS whose clearest case is a 12-drive SATA plan that also needs built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet. This review is based on model-specific manufacturer material, not hands-on use, laboratory testing, an inspected seller unit or measured transfer results.

Twelve SATA trays in a 2U chassis

ASUSTOR's English product and hardware pages identify the AS7212RDX as the LOCKERSTOR 12R Pro Gen2, with twelve internal 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA positions. The exact-model datasheet calls it a 2U chassis and lists dimensions of 88 x 439 x 576 mm (height x width x depth). It weighs 14 kg in the manufacturer's reference specification. The body depth is not the rack depth you need: rails, cable turns, service access, front-door clearance and installed drive weight all need separate allowance. Measure the cabinet before treating the 2U height as proof of fit. The official product page, hardware selector and model datasheet show the exact profile.

One M.2 2280 NVMe slot with a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface is listed separately from the twelve SATA trays. ASUSTOR's selector shows a separate M.2 volume mode of Single. That connector is neither a thirteenth SATA bay nor a two-device M.2 mirror; the site does not infer a supported SSD model, capacity or firmware combination from the slot description. Check the exact drive and firmware list for this model before planning storage. The selector's expansion field and the exact datasheet disagree on the maximum total bay count with expansion—40 versus 28—so this assessment uses only the twelve native positions and leaves the expansion total unresolved.

Built-in 10GbE, without promising file-transfer speed

The base unit has two individual 10-GbE ports and two individual Gigabit ports. A single built-in 10-GbE interface therefore clears a 10-Gbps link-rating requirement without assuming an optional card. The two Gen5 PCIe slots support additional network or SAS cards, but those are separate choices: compatibility, slot use, transceivers or cable, switch ports, client adapters and the complete network path all matter. Link aggregation does not turn several slower ports into one faster port, and a 10-Gbps label is not a measured file-transfer result. The chassis also lists HDMI for service only; it is not a desktop video output for a normal display workflow.

ASUSTOR specifies an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7745 processor with eight cores and sixteen threads, 16 GB of ECC DDR5-4800 UDIMM memory installed, four memory slots and a stated 192-GB maximum. These are specification facts, not a guarantee that a particular virtual machine, container or business workload will perform well. The memory ceiling and CPU architecture may be attractive for a system expected to do more than file serving, but the buyer should compare the software's own requirements and the exact expansion card or memory part before upgrading.

Storage protection is an owner-created plan

The exact model's RAID list includes RAID 1. A possible starting arrangement is two buyer-selected, compatibility-checked SATA drives in an owner-created mirror: it uses two of twelve trays, leaving ten native positions unused, and can coexist with one of the built-in 10-GbE ports. The manufacturer package reference and the U.S. Store item name identify a diskless base configuration; neither lists data drives or an initialized storage volume. No particular drive-capacity or firmware pair was confirmed here. Before initialization, back up any data already on the disks because setup may erase it. A mirror can help with a drive failure, but it is not protection against deletion, malware, theft, a failed NAS or a lost site; keep another recoverable copy elsewhere.

Plan for power, rails and the actual shipment

The exact selector and datasheet list two 550-W 80 PLUS Platinum power supplies and a redundant supply arrangement. The manufacturer's figures are 102 W in operation and 99 W in disk hibernation; they are reference values, not measurements of your populated system, a guaranteed idle draw or an electricity-cost estimate. Two supplies do not create independent power paths if both cords share one circuit, PDU, UPS or building feed. Check the intended rack power design separately.

ASUSTOR's package reference lists the unit, a quick-install guide, two AC cords, two Cat5e LAN cables, two Cat6a 10GbE cables and 48 screws for each listed drive format. It does not list data drives, a configured volume or rack rails. The exact U.S. Store listing identifies the model-specific NAS SKU as 90-AS7212RX1-MF10 and describes the configuration as diskless; that identity bridge does not prove what another seller will ship. Confirm the delivered SKU, all trays and both PSUs, rail kit, cable set, returns, support channel and written warranty terms. ASUSTOR's status table marks the model Generally Available with software and technical support shown as Supported and a five-year duration; that is not evidence of any seller's stock or of a particular unit's coverage.

Who should shortlist it?

AS7212RDX is worth comparing when twelve SATA positions, a 2U rack footprint, ECC memory and native 10GbE matter together. It is less compelling when a buyer needs a quiet desk-side unit, a smaller number of bays, a confirmed included rail package, or a proven application benchmark. Its most useful advantage over the older 12-bay LOCKERSTOR 12R Pro AS7112RDX is the documented Gen2 platform: Ryzen 7 PRO, DDR5 ECC and two native 10-GbE ports rather than the older model's four built-in 1-GbE ports. That is a specification comparison, not a performance test.

Before buying, verify the 12R Gen2 identity and U.S. SKU, current drive/firmware compatibility, rack depth and rails, upstream 10GbE equipment, the seller's actual package and a separate backup plan. The manufacturer package reference and AS72XXRDX quick-install guide help check the model-specific contents and installation sequence; neither substitutes for confirming an individual shipment.
